2018-2019 BOARD MEMBER CANDIDATE STATEMENTS


INCUMBENT CANDIDATES
Donald Alvarez has been a member of the Scottsdale Bar Association for many years and has been a member of the Board of Directors for 6 years. He has served on the following Board Committees: Budget, Membership, Social, and Speakers (Chair).

Over the course of his over 42 year legal career, he has served on numerous charitable boards and foundations, including the Maricopa County Bar Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix Foundation Board of Trustees, Arizona Boys Ranch, and Youth Partners Foundation. He also served as a member of the City of Scottsdale Judicial Appointments Advisory Board for 6 years and was Chairman for 3 years. He has been a Neutral with the American Arbitration Association since 1981 and continues to serve as an Arbitrator and Mediator, and is a long-time member of Arizona Association for Justice, also known as the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association.

Don is interested in continuing to serve the Scottsdale Bar Association on its Board.
  Charlie Berry is a business and securities lawyer who has resided in Scottsdale since 1978, and has based his practice in Scottsdale for more than 25 years. He currently serves as a director and secretary of the Scottsdale Bar Association, and has been chairman of the Association’s luncheon speakers committee for the past two years. Charlie represents business entities and individuals in a wide spectrum of transactions, focusing primarily on capital formation, business management and real estate, and has participated in many securities industry arbitrations. He has been a member of the Scottsdale Bar Association since approximately 1980, and has been actively involved in activities of the State Bar of Arizona, serving as Chairman of both the Business Law Section and the Securities Regulation Section. Charlie regularly participates in continuing legal education seminars and panels.  Charlie has served as Treasurer of Scottsdale Bar, is currently Secretary, and will seek the office of Vice President if re-elected.
   
   
   



 

NEW CANDIDATES
  Jason Clark is a litigation attorney at Lang & Klain, P.C. He joined the firm in 2015, after clerking two years at the Court of Appeals following his graduation from Arizona State University in 2013, and represents contractors, businesses, and individuals in the firm’s construction and commercial litigation practice groups.

Jason has been a member of the Scottsdale Bar Association since he started in private practice. He would appreciate the opportunity to take on a more active role in the Scottsdale Bar Association by becoming a board member and contributing to its mission and rich tradition.

 Ryan Cummings

Ryan Cummings is an owner of the R&R Law Group, a criminal defense firm, located just North of Old Town Scottsdale.  He has been practicing criminal defense the entire 7 years he has been licensed.  The firm has been featured in the Arizona Republic and made appearances on Let Joe Know with ABC 15 for their work in the State.

 

Ryan is interested in becoming a board member to be able to use his skills to contribute to Scottsdale.  Alongside his interest in the Scottsdale Board, Ryan is currently a steering committee member for Wills for Heroes which provides free estate planning for Police and Fire Departments, First Responders and other members in the community.  He is also a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association and Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice.

  Tom Horne has been a litigator for 45 years. He has also served in all four branches of government: (1) executive (attorney general and state supt of schools); (2) legislative (member of legislature); 3. judicial (judge pro tem in superior court and court of appeals); and (4) local (24 years on Paradise Valley School Board, 10 years as President). He is the author of Arizona Construction Law, published by the state bar of Arizona (first published 1978, second edition, and 2014 supplement), and was the chairman of all state bar seminars on Arizona construction law from 1978 to 2002 (when he was first elected to state-wide office). He only does litigation (commercial, personal injury, divorce, probate, and dependency) and tells potential clients that he will not read a contract unless people are fighting about it. He is a graduate of Harvard College, magna cum laude, and the Harvard Law School, with honors.
  Perry Klauber is a commercial real estate and corporate transactional attorney who grew up in Scottsdale.  He has served on the Board of the Young Lawyers’ Division of the State Bar of Arizona, and has been a member of the Scottsdale Bar Association since shortly after graduating from law school in 2015.  He represents some of the largest commercial real estate companies and businesses in Arizona and serves numerous charitable causes, including the United Way, the Paiute Legal Clinic, and his church. 

 

Perry is interested in providing a youthful perspective for the Board while maintaining its existing traditions, and participating in speaker and new member recruitment.  He believes that continuing to recruit compelling and informative speakers is key to maintaining a strong Bar Association.

  Lori Metcalf has been practicing law in the valley for 26 years. She retired from her position as a Judge at the Phoenix Municipal Court in December of 2017 and is currently the managing partner of the Law Office of Lori Metcalf, located in Cave Creek, Arizona. She primarily focuses her law practice in the areas of probate, construction and civil litigation. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Arizona Summit Law School and Arizona State University.
 
Lori believes that community involvement fosters confidence in our legal and education systems. She has served on various committees for the Phoenix Municipal Court and local bar associations. She has volunteered her time as a mock trial coach for high school teams and a Girl Scout troop leader. Lori is a current member of the Steering Committee of the Arizona Women Lawyers Association-Maricopa Chapter (AWLA-Maricopa) and Chair of the Leadership Appointments Committed for AWLA-Maricopa. She is interested in serving on the Board of the Scottsdale Bar Association to further contribute to the legal community.
